It is a great sadness that we share the passing of former Estill, Mayor Thomas Owens, who served in numerous of organizations throughout the Estill Community. Owens was the second black Mayor of the town of Estill. Thomas was the Mayor of Estill from 1996-2008. Graveside services for Deacon Thomas Owens will be held Sunday, April 19, 2020 at 12 noon at Goodwill Baptist Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be held Saturday from 2 to 6 pm in the chapel of Garvin and Garvin Funeral Home in Estill, SC.
Deacon Thomas Owens passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2020 after a brief illness. He was a member of Goodwill Baptist Church where he was the chairman of the Deacon Board. He was a 1979 graduate of Estill High School and a 1983 graduate of Benedict College. He was a member of Hampton District 2 School Board where he served as Vic-President. He was also a member of Guiding Light #285 Order of Eastern Stars and a member of Fairview Lodge #393 Order of Master Masons. At the time of his death he was employed with Coastal Empire Community Mental Health in Ridgeland, SC. for over 25 years.
Thomas act as a father figure to his nieces and nephews. Tony as many people would called him , leaves behind two boys Jeshon and Anthony "Zack" Williams. Two brothers Marvin Owens of Estill South Carolina, and Rubin Hill of Savannah Georgia. Four sisters Linette(Morris) Miller of Estill south Carolina, Adriane "Keshia" (Wendell) Mattison, Patricia (Butchie) white, and Barbara Mathews all of New York city. Two speical nephews Sean Mattison of New York City and Robert Williams of Columbia south Carolina. A niece who he raised as a daughter April Smart of Columbia, South Carolina. His speical girls (nieces) Aubri Mattison, Tammy White, Sharice White, Patrice White, Janice White all of New York City, Robyn White of Greenville South Carolina, Kianah and Jaliyah Williams of Columbia South Carolina, Eula and Alisha Miller of Beaufort South Carolina and Taniya Garvin of Estill South Carolina.
