Funeral services for Mother Katie C. Garvin will be held Friday, October 16, 2020 at 11 am at Martin Temple CME Church with burial in the Breller Field Cemetery. Public viewing will be held Thursday from 1 to 8 pm in the chapel of Garvin and Garvin Funeral Home. Mother Katie Cooper Garvin was born on December 1, 1926, in Kingstree, South Carolina to the late Joe Zinnerman Cooper and Eliza Gordon Cooper. She completed her high school education at Tomlinsor High School in Kingstree, South Carolina where she was Salutatorian of her class. She continued her education at Claflin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in English and Social Studies with an emphasis in French. While attending Claflin College she joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She was also a cheerleader for two years.In September 1948, she came to Estill, South Carolina where she was employed as an English Teacher 38 years at Estill Training and Estill High School. In addition to teaching English, she taught French for several years and Adult Education for twenty-five years.In 1950, she was joined in marriage to Washington Garvin, Jr. They were blessed with four children. Their son Reginald Garvin preceded her in death. In 1951, she joined Hopewell CME Church where she attended faithfully until her husband returned from Korea after serving two years of active duty. She then joined Martin Temple CME Church where she attended faithfully. During her years at Martin Temple CME Church she served faithfully as a Stewardess, Trustee, a Leader of Class Leaders, Choir Member, Director of the Board of Christian Education, Sunday School Teacher and the proud Mother of the Church. She was a member of Guidling Light Chapter #285 Order of Eastern Stars where she was a Past Worthy Matron. On Thursday, October 8, 2020 Mother Katie Cooper Garvin peacefully slipped away to be with the Lord at Beaufort Memorial Medical Center in Beaufort, South Carolina. Mother Katie was strongly devoted to her family, her faith, and her community. She exemplified the true meaning of being a leader who loved helping others and was loved by many; especially her family and former students. Her memories will forever be cherished by her loving children: Bruce Davis, Gail(Jarome) Cohen, Conchita (James) Bostick and Washington(Sherry) Garvin. Loving grandchildren and great grandchildren that she loved dearly and she enjoyed all of them in her own special way.
