In her young adult years, she began attending Mt. Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church where she accepted Christ as her personal Savior. She later moved her membership to Independent Pentecostal Church of Christ, Shirley, South Carolina. She loved her church and church family dearly. She served as the Church Secretary, Choir Director and Choir President until her health began to fail. Mother Essie loved to sing and two of her favorite songs were: "My Heart is Fixed, My Mind is Made Up" and "That's the Kind of God that I Serve". On July 15, 1955 she was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Albert Gordon. To this union three sons were born; A. Eugene, Wilbur and Carl. Over the years her family has multiplied.
