Obituary

Funeral services for Deacon John Luther Gordon will be held Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 11 am
Cypress Creek Cemetery in Pineland, South Carolina. Public viewing will be held Wednesday from 4pm to 6pm in
the chapel of Garvin and Garvin Funeral Home in Estill, SC. John Luther Gordon, 74, of Estill, SC,
passed away on Monday, October 25, 2021, after a valiant battle with prostate cancer.
John, who was also affectionately known as "Old Man" by loved ones, was born on
February 21, 1947 to the late Luther Gordon Jr. and Elizabeth "Shing" (Tobin) Gordon in
Hampton County, SC. After graduating from Estill Training School in 1966, he went on
to travel across the state line where he lived in North Carolina for several years.
Growing homesick, John returned to his hometown of Estill in the 1970's and spent his
days mastering his craft as a residential and commercial painter. In 1977, he met the
strikingly beautiful Daisy Erwin, whom he wed on March 8, 1980 and became the
instantly proud father to Jerome and Bobby, aka "Punkin" and "Champ" respectively.
John and Daisy went on to have two more children, Yvonne and Beverly, and later
adopting two more—Shakevia "Peaches" and Evelyn "Plum." At a young age, John
became a member of Lovewell Baptist Church in unincorporated Lena, SC where he'd
accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was ordained a baptist deacon. He
remained a devoted deacon and a loyal member of Lovewell until his final day. John
was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt
they deserved. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world, something
he often mentioned. To lead by example, John, with the support of his beloved wife,
stepped out on faith with an entrepreneurial spirit to establish John Gordon Painting and
operated the business for over 30 years. Anyone who knew John knew he was the most
loving father and husband a family could ask for. John was predeceased by his mother
and father; siblings Clarence Jones, Martha Lee Grant, Ruby Gordon, and James
Gordon; and son, Bobby Akins II. He is survived by his wife Daisy of the home; children
Jerome (Lakeisha) Erwin of Rincon, Georgia, Yvonne (Lamont) Jones of Raleigh, NC,
Beverly Gordon of Estill, SC, and Shakevia and Evelyn Gordon both of Greenwood, SC;
sister Redell (Ed) Scott of Estill, SC; brother Harrison Gordon of Estill, SC; sisters-in-law
Maryland Gray of Estill, SC, Carrie Gourdine of Charlotte, NC, and Marian (William)
Gourdine of Rock Hill, SC; brother-in-law Johnny (Ella) Erwin of Garnett, SC; brother-
friend Johnnie Green of St. George, SC; 27 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and 2
great-grandchildren on the way; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
